FreeBSD 6.3 is out with performance and stability improvements, bug fixes and some new features, including new versions of KDE, Gnome, Xorg, Bind, Sendmail, the lagg driver from OpenBSD/NetBSD, a re-implementation of unionfs and freebsd-update support for i386 and amd64 binary upgrades from earlier versions.
Other Highlights: twa, pw, top, em
Some other highlights include:
- The twa driver has been updated to support AMCC’s 3ware 9650 series of SATA controllers.
- pw now supports a -M option to set the permissions of a user’s newly created home directory.
- top now supports a -j flag to display the jail ID for each process.
- The em driver has been updated to version 6.7.2 from Intel.

Something Great
I currently run FreeBSD 6.2/i386 on all my servers and have been pleased with it. I had some stability issues with 6.0 and 6.1, but 6.2 has been perfect. If 6.3 can do better than that, it will be something great indeed. I have no plans to upgrade my machines immediately but it is on my todo list. If you’re about to set up a new FreeBSD desktop or server, though, I would recommend installing 6.3.
